Mort Stuhlbarg was just out of college at the University of Cincinnati when he moved to Long Beach in 1961 to work for Arvin Industries Inc., then a Fortune 500 company.

In 1968 he founded Stuhlbarg & Assoc. Inc., which evolved into one of the original trading firms that was invited to begin doing business in China in 1975.  After several years importing various hardware products from China, he founded SISCO and began manufacturing home and office safes in Japan, Korea, China and Thailand.  These safes were sold primarily in the U.S. under the Brinks, Honeywell and Protector brand names until he sold the company to First Alert in 2009 and retired soon after.

During much of his business career and after, Mr. Stuhlbarg has involved himself with various civic and non-profit causes in Long Beach and on a national basis.  He served on the National Board of Directors of NCCJ (National Conference for Community and Justice) as well as the local agency, CCEJ, which elected him President in 1996.

He was one of the original board members and founders of Long Beach Ronald McDonald House, where he chaired the campaign to build the existing house and served as the chairman of its Board of Trustees until January 2014.

Other philanthropies have included:  The Jewish Federation and Foundation of Long Beach and West Orange County, St. Mary Hospital Foundation, International City Theatre, Child Net Youth and Family Services Board of Directors, the Long Beach Arts Council and the Long Beach Symphony, among others.

Mr. Stuhlbarg is a past chair of the Long Beach Planning Commission, the advisory body that determines and advises the Mayor and City Council on all matters affecting development of the city.

He and his wife Susan have two children.  Michael, an actor on stage and screen and Laurie, who teaches English writing at Keene State College in Keene New Hampshire.  They have one grandchild, Eli Harris, who lives in Keene as well.
