LA County Sheriff Jim McDonnell will be the guest on the next edition of Straight Talk. He joins host Art Levine to provide an update on his first months in office, including the problem of jailhouse violence and the impact of re-alignment and the passage of Prop. 47 on public safety. Sheriff McDonnell also discusses the vital role of community policing, and its importance in creating a common bond between the public and the police in providing for safe communities.

The show will air in Long Beach and 70 surrounding cities on Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24 at 9am and 7pm on LBTV 3 and FiOS 21 and at 10am and 8pm on Charter Channel 188. It will be repeated the following weekend at the same times.

Straight Talk is Viewable on Demand at this website and on YouTube and can be heard on iTunes.

This show will also be webcast throughout the world on the University website — csulb.edu — as part of CSULB’s Commencement Ceremonies the week of Tuesday, May 19 through Friday, May 22.

U.S. VETS President/CEO Stephen Peck discusses the problem of homelessness among veterans and what is being done to address this important problem and communal responsibility.

Memorial Day is more than a time for BBQ and relaxation with family and friends. We should spend a moment to reflect upon the sacrifices of the brave men and women of our armed forces and our public safety personnel who have sacrificed so much so we can enjoy our freedoms. Many take our liberties for granted, but they in fact come with a heavy price.

Those who feel inclined to pay tribute to our fallen heroes in a more tangible way might consider attending the very moving Memorial Day Observance on Monday, May 25 from 10am to noon at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes.

More than five thousand people are expected to participate in the observance. Recognized as one of the most popular in the nation, this 30th Annual Observance will pay tribute to all the men and women who have lost their lives in defense of the United States of America.

The 2015 Memorial Day program will include:

  • Release of 100 doves
  • Parade of Colors presented by the armed forces, veterans groups and local police and fire departments
  • Vietnam Memorial Traveling Wall
  • Musical Performance by the Cabar Feidh Bagpipe Band
  • Musical Performance by Palos Verdes Symphonic Band
  • Patriot Guard Riders
  • Aerially Fly-overs featuring C-17 (March AFB)
  • Special Performancees by the 21st Century Skydiving Team
  • Presentation of Memorial Wreathes with a 21-gun salute and playing of “Taps”

The entire community is invited to participate in this year’s observance. Admission is free. Plan to arrive early to allow time for parking and the walk of the ceremony site. For more information, visit www.greenhillsmemorial.com or call (310) 521-4460.
