Timothy O'Reilly

Timothy L. O'Reilly is in his 20th year of practicing law in Long Beach. He joined the Long Beach City Prosecutor's Office as a Deputy City Prosecutor after returning from an overseas military deployment. He quickly proved his skills as a hard-hitting prosecutor and was promoted to the highest appointed position in the office: Assistant City Prosecutor. Since then, he has taken over responsibility for court operations, office policy, professional personnel, and budgeting matters in the Prosecutor's Office.

Timothy has earned a reputation as a tough, strong, yet fair and ethical prosecutor. He has won the respect of our police, fellow prosecutors, victims of crime, and even the criminal defense bar. He has personally prosecuted almost every type of case the office handles ranging from vehicular manslaughters and stabbings, to drunk drivers, domestic violence, and gang crime. He has supervised and held oversight responsibility for the prosecution of literally tens of thousands of cases since becoming Assistant City Prosecutor.

His experience in handling criminal cases ranges from the simplest infractions to the most serious felonies. Timothy's legal experience also includes general civil, administrative, and appellate matters. He was honored with the opportunity of working in private practice with two of Long Beach's most notable attorneys, Edward P. George, Jr., and Albert C. S. Ramsey. Timothy is rated and recognized by the prestigious Martindale-Hubble lawyer rating system at its highest rating of “AV” (Preeminent Skills, Highly-Ethical).
Timothy is a known leader in the local community. He is a past President of both the Long Beach Bar Association and the Long Beach Barristers. He is credited with leading the Bar Association's efforts to start the long process toward getting a new Long Beach courthouse and has chaired numerous legal committees.

Today, he continues to work closely with our Judges in improving the delivery of justice services. Additionally, he works to ensure the highest-quality education for our police officers by serving as an Instructor in the “Laws of Arrest” and the “Laws of Evidence” for new recruits at the Long Beach Police Academy. His record of teaching also includes helping and guiding our youth through positive role-modeling, such as, his leadership as “Cubmaster” for a 50-plus boy Cub Scout Pack.

He earned his law degree from Whittier College School of Law, where he was on the Honor Roll, Dean's List, Law Review, and Moot Court Honors Board. He is a graduate of California State University, Long Beach, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science, Public Law. While at Long Beach State, he earned a commission in the United States Army as a Field Artillery officer and was named a Distinguished Military Graduate. In 1986, he was appointed to the California Army National Guard. He has mobilized several times during his 24-year military career. These mobilizations include armed service in a law enforcement role, leading soldiers on the streets during the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, and humanitarian and peace-keeping service in the aftermath of the 1994 Northridge Earthquake.

Timothy's most recent military activation was a year-long deployment in 2005. He was called to activate duty as part of Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan Theater) and was assigned to the Joint Detention Operations Group, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. There, he served "inside the wire" in the role of a military police/correctional officer, as the Deputy, and later acting Operations Officer (S-3), supervising a guard force of several hundred troops. His responsibilities included ensuring the safe and humane care and treatment of the unlawful detainee enemy combatants. He was also assigned as the Civil-Military Affairs Officer (S-5) where his duties were to deal with the press, public relations, and governmental affairs for the detention camps.

He continues to serve our community as a member of the Army National Guard and holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His current assignment is as Commander, Training Site (Garrison), Joint Forces Training Base (JFTB), Los Alamitos. Timothy is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, Ft Leavenworth, Kansas. Among his many military awards and decorations are the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, and the Humanitarian Service Medal. He is a member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars and the Military Officers Association of America.

Timothy lives in Long Beach with Stacy, his wife of 20 years, their three children, and the family's Golden Retriever, Maggie.
